Forgotten Man Utd flop wipes out his own team-mate and leaves him writhing in agony before World Cup clash
FORMER Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst almost injured a team-mate with a clumsy challenge during a World Cup training session.
The 33-year-old caught the ankle of Netherlands defender Lutsharel Geertruida from behind while attempting to win the ball.
Geertruida dropped to the floor while screaming in pain, sparking concern from his team-mates.
Weghorst immediately went over to make sure that he was OK and helped him off the floor.
Luckily, the Sunderland loan star was able to continue the session.
A video clip of the incident was shared on social media, prompting fans to react.
One person said: “Weghorst never knows ‘friendly’ mode. That’s a full match tackle in training.”
While another commented: “Going full slide tackle on your own team-mate in a light camp session is wild, but the manager will probably just praise his passion and intensity like usual.”
Weghorst is yet to make an appearance for the Dutch national team at this World Cup.
He was on the bench for the 2-2 draw against Japan last weekend and the 5-1 win over Sweden on Saturday.
The striker has spent the last two seasons with Ajax but is set to become a free agent this summer.
He joined the Dutch side from Burnley in 2024 and went on to make 65 appearances, scoring 20 goals and providing six assists.
Weghorst spent a six-month spell with Man Utd in 2023 but made just five goal contributions in 31 outings.
The Dutchman has also played for the likes of Wolfsburg, Burnley, Besiktas and Hoffenheim.
He will be hoping to feature when the Netherlands face Tunisia in their final group stage match on Thursday.
