Oscar Wembanyama looks up to his superstar brother Victor Wembanyama while paving his own path to basketball glory.
Oscar was born in Versailles, France, on Mar. 18, 2007, to former track and field athlete Félix Wembanyama and basketball coach Elodie de Fautereau. Oscar is the youngest of three, including older brother Victor, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, and older sister Eve, who is also a professional basketball player in the FIBA 3×3 league.
The three were raised in Le Chesnay, France, where their parents encouraged in their athletic pursuits from a young age. As Oscar’s star rises, his big brother Victor has served as a mentor.
“My big brother taught me a lot of things and he fulfilled his role as a big brother very well for me,” Oscar told EuroLeague Basketball in February 2023. “My goal is not to do exactly like him, but to write my own story, as beautiful as possible.”
Here’s everything to know about Victor Wembanyama’s brother, Oscar Wembanyama.
He grew up as the youngest of three siblings in Le Chesnay, France

Oscar is the third and youngest child of Félix and Elodie. His older brother Victor was born on Jan. 4, 2004, and his eldest sister Eve was born on Dec. 10, 2001. The siblings grew up together in Le Chesnay, a small town in France.
All three siblings play basketball professionally. Victor told Slam in October 2022 that he felt a path in basketball was unavoidable for him and his siblings, especially with his mom’s basketball history.
“I mean, I had the choice and I still have the choice to play or not play basketball, but basketball has always been around,” Victor said. “I can’t avoid it in my family.”
Oscar was originally going to play professional handball, but switched to basketball

Oscar originally played handball with his friends. However, he eventually switched to basketball, which was partially influenced by Elodie.
“In my city, all my friends [played handball]. That’s what made me appreciate the sport. I think I was considered a prospect, you could say,” Oscar told EuroLeague Basketball. “I played very little basketball, just with my mother because she organized training courses for children. I got into it in a club last year. I had been considering doing it for a year.”
Oscar continued, “There was a period when I was not doing anything because of Covid, and that emptiness pushed me to do something new, so I turned to basketball.”
He currently plays for SIG Strasbourg, which competes domestically in the French Pro A League.
2006 NBA Champion Jason Williams influenced Oscar’s love of basketball

While fans may expect Oscar’s favorite player to be a taller player like himself — he stands at 6 feet, 7 inches — he was actually inspired to play basketball after watching former Miami Heat point guard and 2006 NBA champion Jason Williams, who is 6 feet, 1 inch tall.
“He is the one who made me want to play basketball,” Oscar told EuroLeague Basketball.
He was inspired by watching his siblings win championships in France

In 2021, Oscar’s sister Eve led France to a championship at the FIBA U20 European Challengers. The next year, Victor won the Pro A Championship while playing for ASVEL.
Watching his siblings win championships was what ultimately inspired Oscar to believe he could reach that level as well. That dream came true when he won the French U15 title during his first season with Nanterre 92 — the same club that his brother, Victor, had previously been a part of.
“My sister and my brother were both French champions, and that was my goal from the start of the season, even though I was just starting basketball,” Oscar told EuroLeague Basketball. “It was incredible, I felt proud, of course, and [winning] was the accomplishment of my whole season. Especially for my first year.”
Oscar attended the 2023 NBA Draft with his siblings

During the 2023 NBA Draft, Oscar, Eve and their parents watched as Victor was picked No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs. Afterwards, the siblings chatted with ESPN about the emotional moment.
“I knew I was going to have tears because every time I thought of the sentence … with the first pick and everything, I got these little tears in my eyes,” Oscar said before being embraced by his big brother.
